Terence Tan is a distinguished legal educator, consultant, and former advocate and solicitor with over two decades of legal practice and academic experience. A graduate of the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Laws (Hons, Second Class Upper) and a Master of Laws (Commercial Law, Merit) from the University of London, he is admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore and is also an ACCA graduate/finalist.
Terence’s career is marked by a unique blend of legal scholarship, practical litigation, and professional training. As a former Assistant Professor and Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore, he taught a broad range of subjects including Company Law, Insolvency Law, Computer Law, Evidence, Constitutional Law, the Singapore Legal System, and the Law of Trusts. He has also conducted litigation in the High Court and State Courts on matters ranging from injunctions against performance bonds to copyright infringement and procurement disputes.
In his capacity as a legal trainer and consultant, Terence has delivered specialised courses in Singapore and Malaysia for leading organisations such as Temasek Holdings’ Management Skills Centre, Singapore Technologies College, Yokogawa Engineering, Mediacorp, the Institute of Banking and Finance, and the Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants. His training portfolio spans topics such as insolvency, judicial management, corruption and corporate ethics, contract and company law, intellectual property, and dispute resolution, including arbitration, negotiation, and mediation. He has also lectured extensively for the ACCA Programme, Kaplan Singapore, and the Murdoch University MBA programme.
Terence’s contributions to legal thought and practice are significant. His feedback on proposed amendments to the Bankruptcy Act in 1995 was acknowledged in Parliament by the Minister of Law and later cited by the Singapore Court of Appeal in Ambank v Yong (2009). He has authored chapters and articles in respected legal publications, updated key legal texts, and served as Deputy Editor for the Butterworth Law Digest. His work reflects a deep commitment to legal education, professional ethics, and practical application of the law.
